Dancing Whole vs Dance Objectification: Protecting Mental Health in Dance Culture


Dance can be a powerful tool for confidence, creativity, and self-expression, but it can also become a place where worth is measured by appearance, achievement, awards, popularity, and the approval of others. This workshop explores how objectification, self-objectification, social media, body image pressures, people-pleasing, and performance expectations can impact mental health. Dancers of all ages are not objects but complex, creative, and valuable humans who deserve dignity and care. Participants will gain practical tools for building resilience, protecting self-worth, and fostering healthier relationships with dance so young people can thrive both on and off the stage. Presented by Alan Boss, Licensed Professional Counselor and uncle of Stephen 'tWitch' Boss, and Leslie Scott Zanovitch, dance advocate, educator, and nonprofit leader. The first 15 minutes of this workshop will be for parents and directors only. Dancers will be invited for the last 45 minutes.…
